Yvonne Lebien’s creative arc has been shaped by a continual investigation into embodying experiences of queer identity within the act of immediate poetic creation. Initially orienting herself toward poetry, she gradually moved through chapters of playing percussion, participating in a random assortment of bands, creating solo noise compositions as Voice Therapy using Max MSP, as well as performance art, eventually leading her to a current practice of vocal-based work without any instruments, effects or processing, often without a microphone at all. Thus her music incessantly confronts the audience, and the performer herself, with the question: what are we hiding from? What do we really gain by prolonging capitalist forms of self expression simply out of the fear of nakedness?
